According to the latest US Census Bureau report for 2005, 74,500 veterans reside in the state of Alaska, and many are not receiving benefits. They are scattered throughout 234 remote bush villages and towns, The only access to these villages is commercial air services, there being no road access due to the large size and small population of the state. The high cost of flights from those villages, to where facilities and treatment is available, results in a grossly underserved segment of our veteran community.

Small aircraft winter flying is limited due to short days, sub-zero temperatures, and icing conditions and will be spent maintaining contact with veterans through correspondence, and an occasional flight as conditions allow. If a veteran needs to come in to Anchorage for treatment and VAO can't fly the mission, a commercial ticket may be purchased for the veteran. From a village in western Alaska, a round ticket can cost $800-$1000. VAO would fly the mission if conditions allowed, at a much lower cost.
